THE KODALY METHOD
The KODALY METHOD is a creative environment for learning music.
THE FOUNDER
Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967) was a Hungarian composer, educator and ethnomusicologist.
THE ESSENCE
“If one were to attempt to express the essence of this education in one word, it would be - singing.” Zoltan Kodaly
THE PHILOSOPHY
“True musical literacy, the ability to read, write and think music is the right of every human being.” Zoltan Kodaly
“To be internalized, musical learning must begin with the child's own natural instrument - the voice. Singing provides the best start to music education: singing without any instrument is the really deep training of the child's musical faculties. It follows that children should learn to read music before they are provided with an instrument.” Zoltan Kodaly
“The education of the musical ear can be most successful if it is begun early, in kindergarten and the primary grades, even earlier if possible.” Zoltan Kodaly
THE OBJECTIVE OF KODALY CLASSES
Kodaly classes are designed to introduce children to the language of music through what is most natural to them - action and singing games. Through these sequential classes, students learn basic rhythms, pitch accuracy, staff notation and music symbols.
Music classes bring important benefits besides the obvious one of developing musical skills:
As the students mature in age and in musical ability, they will have both the confidence and the skills to seek out friends with whom they can share their music - to continue "playing". The music knowledge they acquire in these classes will prove a valuable asset to them for any future instrument or vocal activity they may choose.

- Increased attention span
- Ability to focus through the duration of a group activity or game
- Self-confidence
- Self-expression from the "mini solos" required by many of the games
- Learning that success results from co-operation rather than competition with classmates
- A positive attitude toward "playing" music as an enjoyable way to meet and to spend time with friends
