As a music educator, I have dedicated many years to finding ways to help young students become musically literate and still consider it “fun”. One result is See Saw and Solfa for Cello – a collection of well known Kodaly songs. It is meant to accompany a cello method book, offering a variety of very approachable songs for beginning cello students in a classroom setting or in private lessons. As Kodaly students will likely know many of the songs, they will find it much easier to learn to play them on the recorder.
The songs progress from m r d through s m and s l m to d m s and
d r m s l. Rhythms are introduced gradually from simple tas and ti-tis to complex patterns in 6/8. Many of the songs are actually games which can be played before playing them on the cello. (These games are included in my TpT book See Saw and Solfa ). The size of the notes on the staff varies from large to smaller as the music becomes more difficult. The songs reinforce reading and aural recognition of rhythms, solfa and notes.

INSTRUCTIONS
Print 2 or 4 decks of different colours on card stock and cut out.
As there are many concepts covered in the deck, I have found it best to introduce a few cards at a time after exploring their meaning and finding them in songs the students know.
MATCH ME
With 2 decks
Deal out all the cards. Leader places a card on the table naming it . The players in turn must place their matching card on top of the first card.
This simple game is an excellent way to introduce young children to the symbols used in music for their instrument.
A more complex version – play as Fish below, but using only 2 decks.
Game time – 10 to 15 minutes.
MUSIC FISH
With 4 decks
Shuffle all four decks and deal out four cards to each player. Place the remaining cards in the centre. Players pick up their cards. If they have two of a kind, they place them face down in front of them. The first player asks one of the others for a card which he has in his hand. If he receives the requested card he places it, with his own card face up in front of him. If not, he picks up a card from the fish pile in the centre. If this card matches one of the cards in his hand he puts the pair in the centre. The next player then takes his turn.
Players may “steal” cards from one another’s piles if they have the same card in their hand. When they have four of a kind on the table they may turn the cards face down, making the pile “safe” from “stealers”.
The full game, using all four decks takes about one half hour to play. If less time is desired, use only two or three decks.
Game time - 15 to 20 minutes.
SIGNS INCLUDED:
Bass clef, double bar, repeat sign, 1st & 2nd endings, sharps, flats, naturals, dynamics,
D.S., ritard, bowings (up, down, pizz., staccato, slur, trill, accent, pause, WB, UH, LH, SB, FB,).

FINGERBOARD GAME FOR CELLO

8 pages

This series of games is meant to fill in a gap I have noticed with many students – knowledge of the pitch names on the fingerboard and on the music staff. Often students play by rote or from fingering only and are not able to identify the notes they are playing on the music staff or on the fingerboard. Hopefully these games will provide a visual and tactile “map” and demonstrate how the patterns of fingering and scales can facilitate good intonation. Although concentrating on the sharps 0 1 3 4 finger pattern, the games do also offer opportunity to use other patterns.
Use with students individually or in pairs or groups.
Duration: about 1/2 hour

A collection of well known songs used in Kodaly programs and Canadian folk songs. It is meant for beginning recorder students in a classroom setting or in private lessons.  As Kodaly students will likely know many of the songs, they will find it much easier to learn to play them on the recorder.
The songs progress from m r d, through s m and s l m to d m s and d r m s l.  Rhythms are introduced gradually from simple tas and    ti-tis to complex patterns in 6/8.
Many of the songs are actually games which can be played before playing them on the recorder. The rhythms on the 4 beat rhythm sheets make excellent ostinati.
